FAQ

Questions?
We've got answers.

DecentPaste uses libp2p for peer-to-peer networking. Devices discover each other on your local network using mDNS (multicast DNS). Once paired, they communicate directly without any intermediary server. Your clipboard data stays on your network.

Yes! All clipboard content is encrypted with AES-256-GCM before transmission. The encryption keys are derived using X25519 ECDH key exchange during pairing - the shared secret is mathematically derived on both devices and never transmitted over the network.

Currently, DecentPaste only works when devices are on the same local network. This is by design for privacy - your data never leaves your network. We may add an optional encrypted relay in the future for cross-network sync.

Currently, DecentPaste supports text content only. Image and file syncing are on our roadmap. For now, you can copy text, URLs, code snippets, and any other text-based content.

On Android, clipboard access is restricted for privacy. Two ways to share:

Easiest: Select text in any app → Share → choose DecentPaste. Sent directly to paired devices.

Alternative: Select text → Share → "Copy to clipboard" → open DecentPaste → tap "Share Now".

Yes, 100% free and open source under the Apache-2.0 license. No premium tiers, no subscriptions, no ads. Since there's no cloud infrastructure, there are no ongoing costs to pass on to users.
